PEARL GUIDE

Your guide to understanding the how, what and why on cultured pearls:

Cultured Pearls:
Natural pearls are extremely rare, which is why cultured pearls are sold at market today The process of creating a cultured pearl is fairly complex.

It begins by implanting a bead into an oyster. The oyster then begins its natural process of coating the bead with layer upon layer of proteins and minerals. These layers are known as nacre. The luster and shine found on pearls is caused by this nacre.

Shine and luster
The layers of nacre on the surface of the pearl result in the unique way in which light gets reflected. This is what promotes the luster and shine of the pearl. The size of the pearl is a significant indicator of its luster. A larger sized pearl will have more nacre and hence reflect more light. This is evident if you compare a 6 mm cultured freshwater pearl with a 12 mm cultured seawater pearl. The size has a tremendous bearing on the pearl’s luster.

Pearl Luster

The amount of surface markings on the nacre also has an effect on the price of a pearl. At E.S. Designs, we provide you with a fine range of pearls with assorted surface markings, colors, and prices.

It is also often the rarest! At E.S. Designs, we provide you with the highest quality of perfectly round pearls. Our collection ranges from pearls from the South Sea to Tahiti and Akoya, as well as other varieties. Usually freshwater pearls have a size ranging from 3 to 7 mm, while Tahitian and South Sea varieties may have diameters as big as 13 mm. Akoya pearls have diameters ranging from 6 to 8.5 mm. Pearls are traditionally weighed in mommes, which is an old Japanese measure still used for pearls today. One momme equals 3.75 grams or 18.75 carats.

Care and Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance of pearls is essential to prolong their life and luster. Regular wearing of pearls is essential to keep the pearls lustrous. The body’s natural oils can actually enhance their luster. Harmful chemicals, such as makeup, perfume, bleaches, and hairspray, should never come into contact with pearls. Even household products that contain chemicals need to be kept away from pearls. These chemicals can erode the nacre and the pearl’s natural shine. When dressing, be sure to put on your pearls last and take them off as soon as you get home. You also need to gently wipe the pearls with a soft cloth and keep them separated from other jewelry pieces. This will prevent any scratches from eroding the surface.
