Diamond Polish and Symmetry: The Finer Touches That Make A Difference.
The criteria for grading the polish and symmetry of a diamond have remained the same since GIA introduced its grading system in the 1950’s. The polish and symmetry refers to the finish that is done after cutting the diamond.
Generally the polish and symmetry of a diamond don’t make a much difference as the diamond cut; however, these finer characteristics of a diamond can either add to or deduct from the cost of a diamond.
Polish Grading
Polish is determined by the visibility of luster and can range from Excellent down to Poor, depending on how well the diamond was finished before wearing.
Symmetry Grading
Symmetry refers to how well-proportioned the cut of the stone is. For instance, round diamonds should have symmetry and balance to attract the most amount of light for maximum fire and brilliance.
