| Diamond Detection: Is That Diamond in the Jewelry Showcase New or Used? |
It is common knowledge that diamonds are one of the most expensive investments man can make in his lifetime. The hefty price tag comes with the fact that diamonds are earth’s hardest natural substances. These sparkling gemstone pieces do not erode, wrinkle, rust, or decay. Never! Though it is true that diamonds may be chipped, you can be sure that the possibility of this damage happening to your precious sparkler will be close to nil. It takes incredible force at a specific angle to break that diamond.
Jewelers around the world accept diamonds as trade-ins. One way they earn profit is by mounting them on different settings and reselling them as new diamond jewelry. Old mine-cut diamonds are re-cut for more brilliance, which results in greater profitability for the jeweler. The certificates that come with a diamond jewelry purchase include only details regarding its quality namely cut, color, clarity, and carat. It does not indicate the age and origin of the diamond. The truth of the matter is that there is no way to trace the previous owners of the diamond in your precious jewelry. Unless you purchase it directly from a diamond mine, the sparkler on your finger or on your neck is most likely a used gemstone from years, or even centuries back.
Diamonds do not age and its beauty lasts even a thousand years from today. It would be accurate to state that our diamonds will live beyond our lifetime. This makes diamond jewelry great heirloom articles. The question whether diamonds are truly new or not is not of prime importance. What matters most is that we make use of diamonds as gorgeous pieces of fine accessories to complement and complete our look for that special occasion.
