Baguette-cut diamonds are most often used as accent stones in diamond ring mountings or settings. These special-cut diamonds add a very crisp, clean and elegant charm to a gorgeous diamond ring. Baguettes are diamonds that are cut in long and thin rods. They possess only thirteen facets as compared to round-cut diamonds that have 58 facets. Baguettes come in two types namely, straight and tapered.

There are three important features about baguettes that may be helpful to jewelry enthusiasts.  First, baguette-cut diamonds are the most brittle among all the different diamond cuts. This is because of its long, thin, and narrow shape. A bump or strike can cause serious damage to your precious stone. This type of diamond becomes more vulnerable to damage if the edge is exposed on the ring, allowing greater possibility for bumping. The best mounting style for a baguette-cut diamond is the channel setting since it covers all around the edges of the stone.

The second feature of baguettes is the fact that it lacks the brilliance of a true sparkler. Since these gemstones have less light coming from inside the stone and only thirteen facets from which to refract the light, you cannot expect it to shine as brightly as you would like. Since baguettes lack brilliance, which actually cover up a gemstone’s imperfections, inclusions and flaws are more readily seen. Black carbon spots can be detected by the naked eye in baguette-cut diamonds.

The last essential feature of baguettes involve the fact that they tend to be cloudy. Any dirt buildup at the bottom of the stone readily shows up and makes the baguette appear cloudy, hazy, foggy, or dark. It is important to look carefully into the baguettes in a diamond ring before purchasing it. Ensure that all the baguettes look clean to the eyes, which translates to an SI clarity. You must also regularly clean baguettes so they will look their best at all times.
